For much of September, the strategic question was whether attacks on Saudi Arabia's East-West Pipeline, combined with increasing Houthi pressure in the Red Sea, could neutralize the principal alternatives to the Strait of Hormuz.

Saudi Arabia built the East-West Pipeline precisely so its crude would not be hostage to Hormuz. The attack on that pipeline, combined with Houthi advances toward Bab el-Mandeb, demonstrates the next stage of the contest: the battle is migrating from the chokepoint to the network designed to bypass the chokepoint.

Piracy is back in Iran's wheelhouse. Add the possibility of extortion and you have some good ol' Barbary pirates type of stuff going on.
